From June 2-8 over 170 paddlers will take a journey down the Schuylkill River. Along the way, they’ll learn about the many ways to have fun in the outdoors: hiking, biking, yoga and, of course, paddling. Following is a schedule of events for the sojourn.
Please be aware that the times listed are based on past experience; many things, including weather and river flow, can impact timing. The public is invited to attend all programs at evening campsites at no charge.
Friday June 1, Schuylkill Haven
Schuylkill Haven Island Park welcomes paddlers to the 14th Annual Schuylkill River Sojourn as they begin registering at 4 p.m.An ice cream social will begin at 6 p.m. Kauffman’s Chicken Barbeque will also be available to those who pre-order by May 31, by contacting Gloria Ebling at bookkeeper@schuylkillhaven.org.

Port Clinton Arrival: 4:30 p.m.
The Port Clinton Fire Company serves up a spaghetti dinner at the Fire House as a fundraiser from 4-7 p.m. Afterward, the public is invited to join sojourners as sojourn outfitter Doug Chapman offers tips on packing for a kayak/canoe excursion. Chapman is a paddling enthusiast and the owner of Kelly’s Canoe and Kayak Center in Gilbertsville.

After dinner, they’ll hear a presentation on America's footpath, the Appalachian Trail by Kim McKee, community outreach coordinator for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. McKee will tell tales from her thru-hike experience and discuss the trail’s strong connections to the landscapes, waterways and communities along its path through Pennsylvania.

Allegheny Aqueduct Park arrival: 5 p.m.
At 7:30 p.m. in Allegheny Aqueduct Park, John DiRenzo, owner of Tri County Bicycles, will present an entertaining discussion about bicycling. In addition to being a longtime cyclist and business owner, DiRenzo administers the Schuylkill River Heritage Area’s hugely successful free bike share program, Bike Pottstown.

Pottstown Riverfront Park arrival: 3 p.m.
At 7 p.m., after a long day of paddling, the sojourners will stretch out and relax at beautiful Pottstown’s Riverfront Park, with an open-air yoga session presented by Barbara Kosciewicz, owner of High Street Yoga, in Pottstown. Afterward, the band Sullivan’s Bridge will bring a peaceful end to the evening with a selection of Irish music and rock covers.

Lunch program on Becoming an Olympic Athlete
Mont Clare arrival and Lock 60 lock-through: 4:30 p.m.
Always a sojourn highlight for both participants and onlookers, the paddlers will end their day with a detour onto one of the only watered sections remaining of the Schuylkill Canal. Then, they will lock through Lock 60, the canal’s only fully restored, operating lock. The Otterbein United Methodist Church will serve a spaghetti dinner at 6 p.m. at St. Michael’s Park. Following that, at 7 p.m., Mary and Mark Frank of the Delaware Valley Orienteering Association will lead an informal discussion on the basics of orienteering. The evening activities will finish with a performance by Raven Hill Band, a group of blue grass musicians from Phoenixville.
